Pedagogical Approach
With Agroboros, children get to experience that a farm is much more than a place to grow food. It is a space where they can explore the interconnectedness of nature, develop practical and intellectual skills, build friendships and grow empathy for all forms of life. Here, they learn to care for the environment, adopt healthy habits, and turn their ideas and imagination into concrete actions.
The Essence of Agroboros
More Than a Farm – A Place to Grow
The Camp Experience
A Week That Connects Children to the Land
Through the experiences with the Agroboros camp, children grow attachment to the farm as a place that holds meaning to them. It is where they lived for a week, took part in growing, harvesting and preparing their food, listened to stories about what it is like being a farmer, discovered the smallest of creatures, and made crafts they can remember the farm by. The camp’s experiences help the children to understand their ecological self, meaning that they discover who they are and what their place is in the food systems. The camp also prompts children to dig deeper, feel more, share their thoughts and feelings, and understand one another. With the place-, embodied- and arts-based approaches, Agroboros inspires growth of children’s social and emotional intelligence.
Using principles from the social constructivist Montessori & Reggio Emilia pedagogies, children are gently confronted with real-world food production and consumption challenges. They build understanding that some problems are complex and collective, yet always navigable with curiosity and collaboration. Agroboros encourages children to take part in hands-on activities that help them understand what it requires to grow the food that they eat, what the life of a farmer growing their food is like, and how their food choices have broader consequences. Children get to make sense of their experiences together by reflecting on these activities using forms embodiment and arts. Creating, imagining, feeling, sensing and playing are ways to connect their imagination and emotions to reality and one another. This deepens their learning and leads to long-lasting experiences.
The Learning Approach
Learning by Doing, Thinking, and Feeling
The Agroboros program plants seeds of experience and windows into new ways of thinking, feeling, and acting, that children can choose to nurture and carry forward long after the program ends. Your child will come home with lots of stories, as Agroboros is a camp where they imagine, create, and play. After all, that is what summer holiday is for!
